What's a Herm?

What's a Herm? It is a peculiar type of statue where a portrait of a specific god, hero, or honored individual is atop a column. Further down on the same column there is typically erect male genetalia present. They are called "herms" because Hermes was the phallic god. While it may seem strange to us, these statues with erect phalluses were common in ancient times. They were thought to bring good luck and ward off evil influences. If you have time, look up "Trial of Alcibiades" for an interesting story about herms during a critical juncture in Athenian history.
