Coins of Bolivia with the name and portrait of Simon
Bolivar
Bolivia, Silver 4 soles, 31 mm
Dated 1828.
Potosi mint.
Bolivia was named after Simon
Bolivar. He was its first
president, but held office only from August 12, 1825 to December 29, 1825. Starting in 1827 his name and portrait
appeared on the coins of Bolivia. At
that time Bolivar was still alive but politically active elsewhere in South
America. These are locally and
originally designed coins that are quite abundant even today, because Bolivia
was a huge producer of silver bullion which was exported largely in coin form. However, I do not consider these
coins to be technically from Simon Bolivar, because he didn't rule Bolivia at
the time they were issued.
